The Truth About Pedicure Tubs and Bacteria

Ask yourself—have you ever walked into a salon and seen green or blue Barbicide in the pedicure tubs? Or noticed a single towel casually draped over a tub, as if it were magically germ-proof?

Here’s the hard truth: whirlpool pedicure tubs can trap bacteria, fungi, and other harmful microorganisms if they’re not properly cleaned, disinfected, and maintained.

At Boudoir, we refuse to take shortcuts. We invest hundreds of dollars each month—and thousands per year—on Barbicide alone. Yes, it affects our bottom line, but knowing our clients are safe is priceless.

What the Law Requires vs. What We Do

By law, the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires all salons to:

Soak pedicure tubs and reusable implements in Barbicide for at least 10 minutes.

However, the law does not require salons to sterilize reusable implements in a medical-grade autoclave for 20 minutes.

At Boudoir Nail Bar, we go beyond state requirements because “good enough” isn’t good enough for us.

Water In, Water Out System

We’ve built our pedicure sinks to allow water to flow in and directly out—never recirculating. Between every client, our team:

Scrubs the pedicure sink with soap.
Follows with a 10-minute Barbicide soak.
Documents and time-stamps each cleaning before the next client arrives.

Single-Use Items

Non-reusable tools are either:

Discarded after a single use, or
Given to clients to take home upon request.

Dedicated Sanitation Staff

We employ 2–4 bar-backs and receptionists whose sole focus is maintaining a spotless environment. They work alongside our talented nail artists to ensure:

Pedicure tubs are disinfected before every use.
Implements are sterilized.
Floors, sinks, and surfaces are always sanitized.
